They say life is what happens in the in-between, and that phrase has felt especially true for us these past few months.
In June, Ross had plaque brachytherapy. Afterward, we had our 10-day check-up, and since then, life has slowed into a steady rhythm of supporting his healing and preparing for his next follow-up three months later. That appointment is right around the corner, but in the meantime, we’ve been living in the “in-between.”

We’ll be honest… we’ve been isolating a little. Not because of treatments, but because sometimes you just need to step back, focus on home life, and catch your breath. And in that space, we’ve rediscovered the joy of the small things. And… all the kids started school this year so we’re riding the chaos of that!
Our kitchen has become a playground for little projects:
- A homemade “cream-of-whatever” powder that’s made weeknight cooking easier
- Detangling spray that keeps kid chaos under control
- Chocolate syrup that turns a bowl of ice cream into a celebration
- Taco seasoning that makes us forget store-bought was ever an option
- And now, our newest creation: vanilla extract, quietly steeping away on the shelf like a jar full of patience and promise.
Watch the process and a hilarious couple of moments of Ross learning how to wink with his other eye!
These projects aren’t flashy or big adventures. But they’ve given us laughter, small victories, and reasons to celebrate the waiting. They remind us that life doesn’t pause just because you’re in-between—it keeps moving, and sometimes those quiet stretches hold the sweetest moments of all.
We’d love to hear from you: what’s one small thing you’ve made, tried, or discovered that brought joy to your in-between? Share it in the comments. We’re always looking for new ideas to bring into our home.
